All IBioIC CTP PhD research projects are related to one or more of IBioIC’s thematic areas.  This enables project teams to identify potential synergies and to provide a structured platform for networking and student-led thematic groups.

Synthetic Biology

Synthetic biology is an emerging area of research that can be defined as the design and construction of novel biological pathways, organisms or devices, or the redesign of existing natural biological system.

Bio-catalysis & Biotransformation

The application of biological catalysts, natural and modified enzymes and catalytic antibodies for the synthesis, interconversion or degradation of chemical species.

Sustainable Feedstocks

Due to the increasing global demand for fossil and primary plant-based resources coupled with diminishing reserves, there is a need to identify  a more diverse range of biological-based alternatives. Further research is necessary to identify economically viable alternative resources and to consider the pathway to manufacture of these resources.

Integrated Bioprocessing

Integrated bioprocesses are developed to optimise yield and cost-effectiveness of production of low and high molecular weight molecules.

Downstream Processing

The recovery and purification of bio products from natural sources such as animal or plant tissue or fermentation broth.
